He'd never seen the ocean, though he had always said that he would – one day. He had never made it happen and now it was too late. He'd passed away without a warning – died in his sleep by a heart attack - and with his last and only dream unfulfilled.
His son had always said he’d accompany his father to the shores – one day. He’d seen the ocean once before, but he had longed to go back. Now he was afraid that he’d end up like his father – always saying one day, but never seeing through.
That’s why early one morning he packed his bags and left – but not without a visit to his mother’s. After the goodbye he drove all the way to the east coast and only stopped to sleep and eat and drink.
He drove for days until he could finally see the blue glimmer of the ocean ahead – breathtaking. A smile rested on his face as he traveled the last couple of miles and then parked his car near the pier. He grabbed his traveling bag and abandoned his car – finally.
His stride was slow and apprehensive, but yet it had a certain bounce to it – like a child who has just spotted world’s biggest playground. His hand traveled over the railing as he walked to the very edge of the pier where the water lapped around the pillars. He put his bag down gently and leaned down to retrieve the urn with his father’s ashes and balanced it on the railing – carefully.
“Look dad, it’s the ocean.” The son said in a whisper as he lifted the lid of the urn. After a quick look around – to assure no one was watching – he tilted the urn and allowed to wind to carry the ashes out into the open sea. He was sure this was how his father would’ve wanted it. Now he could truly rest in peace – forever.
